Physiological Effects of Condensed Tannins from Black Currant (Ribes nigrum L.) on Isolated Rat Duodenal Contraction

Condensed tannins (CTs) extracted from various plants have been shown to possess antioxidant, antidiabetic, anthelmintic, anti-palatable and anti-diarrhea activity. Black currant (Ribes nigrum L.), a native plant of northern Europe Asia, is rich in phenolic compounds, including CTs. Among the biological activities CTs, their astringent property likely affect gastrointestinal motility. This study aimed investigate physiological effect CTs black (R. L.) leaves on isolated rat duodenal contraction. Duodenal segments were fixed organ baths containing carbogen aerated Krebs solution at resting tension 0.7 - 0.8 g. The frequency, amplitude, tone contraction recorded. Either or acetylcholine (ACh) cumulatively added into bath concentration between 0.001 10 µg/mL 10–8 10–4 M, respectively. mechanisms ACh actions studied using muscarinic receptor antagonist (atropine, 1.55×10–5 M) calcium channel blocker (verapamil, 10–6 M). It found that had no direct contraction, whereas showed significant increase tonic was suppressed by atropine. Interestingly, presence atropine verapamil, further decrease amplitude compared these 2 blockers alone. concluded would synergize activity enteric neurons smooth muscle membrane. However, use treat gastro-intestinal disorders while having need cautions.
